Why is is still so difficult to find good quality. 'safe'  food when we are eating out or shopping?

Most people know someone with a food allergy or intolerance yet eating out and stocking up are still a challenge.  Lengthy explanations are required more often than not for what should be a straighforward request.  It is a pain, not to mention time consuming and embarrassing when in the public eye or out with friends, to have to go through this rigmorale.

There are some superstars out there who deserve huge appreciation and respect so lets applaud them! Many do try to help but do not have sufficient understanding to do so reliably and safely so give them some time or refer them to us to help them help you.

It is always best to ask to talk to the chef directly to find out exactly what ingredients are included and which dishes can be adapted to be safe for you to eat.  To avoid ruining what should be an enjoyable experience and to be fair to the chef it is wise to phone in advance and talk throught the options - the conversation will give you a pretty good idea whether or not to bother going there!  If they don't know the ingredients in their food.... well 'freshly cooked' claims can be viewed with suspicion!

Special Dietary Food and healthy eating are two of the fastest growing sectors of the food industry with an estimated 1 in 10 people living a special diet (be it due to allergy, intolerance, medical condition, ethical, weight loss or choice).  So talk with your feet and spread the word.  When the bad/lazy cuprits realise they are missing out on their share of a market worth millions of pounds they may just start making changes!

Some already go out of their way to help if they can and even if they do not understand initially they will listen, learn and work with you.  These are the guys you need to tell us all about so RAVE & PRAISE them & get the good word out!

Others handle things rather less helpfully and
these are the establishments we need to NAME & SHAME and alert others to avoid them until they change their approach...

With the ever increasing level or awareness and easy access to information and training regarding various dietary requirements there really is no excuse for unsupportive, and unhelpful service. If they are not prepared to take you seriously then feel no guilt, dob on them - it's your duty!.  Think of it as therapy!

If we get enough bad press for a particular establishment we may even do a little mystery shopping and try to talk them round.

Ring the changes and 'Post New Topic' with the name and town of the place to Rave & Praise or blacklist under Name & Shame. Then just jot down your thoughts.

PLEASE NOTE THAT THE COMMENTS POSTED ABOUT ESTABLISHMENTS ARE ENTIRELY PERSONAL OPINIONS AND EXPERIENCES OF THE AUTHORS WHO ARE MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC AND DO NOT ORIGINATE FROM SPECIAL DIETS DIRECTORY NOR DO THEY REFLECT OR EXPRESS THE COMPANY'S VIEW IN ANY WAY.
