The Food Standards Agency ( FSA )have designed an industry standard card for diners with food allergy .
The Food Standards Agency ( FSA ) has launched a new industry standard system to help food allergies sufferers eat out more safely.
A night out in a restaurant often feels just too risky for many diners with a food allergy and it has been established that as a result many do not take the chance and only eat at home.
The Chef Card, which can be downloaded here and printed off from the FSA website, could offer some reassurance.
The customer's food allergy specifics are filled out on the credit card size slip ready to hand to restaurant staff on arrival to pass through to the kitchen. The chef can then make an informed choice of either avoiding using the allergenic ingredients, or if they feel there is a risk of cross contamination explaining that they are not equipped to cater safely for the diner.
According to the FSA, 10 people die of allergic reactions to food every year in the UK, and many more need to be taken to hospital. According to an article on Caterer Search an FSA Spokesman said “In most cases, these reactions are caused by something eaten in a restaurant or from a takeaway. It’s very important for all caterers to be aware about food allergy and to take it seriously. Chef cards are a simple and effective way to help people with allergies communicate clearly which foods they are allergic to.”
You can download a sheet of blank FSA Think Allergy Chef Cards by clicking on the link below. You can then fill in cut out and carry with you to present to restaurant staff on arrival. We would still advise you to phone ahead if at all possible though to avoid disappointment.
